Requiem is a short work of mourning for four double basses. The gathering of the deepest string timbres establishes a space of lament: heavy, dark and almost close to the ground.
The four instruments sometimes move as a single body, sometimes pull apart. Long bows, low registers and slow slides carry the quiet weight of a requiem. The sound does not rise; it rather sinks, spreads, then gathers again.
The work does not chase a large explosion. Here mourning speaks not through noise, but through density. The piece closes in a stillness similar to the darkness with which it began — four voices fading like a single breath.
