Ölülere Prelüd, klarnet ve yaylı dörtlü için yazılmış derin bir yas meditasyonu niteliğindedir. Ölümün uzak, soluk anısını ve kayıpların hafızadaki sessiz izlerini işleyen eser, Lento temposunda başlar ve dinleyiciyi adeta sisli bir mezarlık havasına sokar; klarnetin “dolce lontano” uzun solukları ile yaylıların sul ponticello fısıltıları arasında kurulan kırılgan diyalog, acının hem yakın hem de erişilmez oluşunu ustaca yansıtır.
Parça baştan sona yumuşak bir yay çizer: açılışta pppp sul ponticello titreşimleri ve klarnetin ppp kromatik çizgileriyle uzak bir ağıt havası kurulur; orta bölümde ord. geçişler, arpej sürtmeleri ve 10. ölçüdeki fff kümelerle duygusal bir patlama yaşanır; finalde ise her şey tekrar söner, uzun sustain’ler ve fermata ile yasın hem yakıcı acısı hem de dingin kabullenişi aynı anda hafızada kalır.
Ölülere Prelüd (Prelude to the Dead) is a deep meditation on mourning for clarinet and string quartet. Working with the distant, pale memory of death and the silent traces of loss in memory, the piece begins in a Lento tempo and draws the listener into an almost misty graveyard atmosphere; the fragile dialogue between the clarinet’s long “dolce lontano” breaths and the sul ponticello whispers of the strings reflects with precision how pain can be both near and unreachable.
The piece draws a soft arc from beginning to end: at the opening, pppp sul ponticello vibrations and the clarinet’s ppp chromatic lines establish a distant lament; in the middle section, ordinary transitions, scraped arpeggios and fff clusters at bar 10 produce an emotional outburst; in the finale everything fades again, and long sustains with a fermata leave both the burning pain of mourning and its quiet acceptance in the memory at once.
